Contrary to popular belief, veganism doesn't involve an uncontrollable passion for animal rights or some fear of dairy and meat products. It only means that some of us like to live without meat or dairy products. Vegans and yo-yo dieters are different; the latter one avoids meat and dairy stuff because it's good to lose weight and control lifestyle diseases like hypertension and high cholesterol levels. I went through many studies that show that going vegan does have its merits and demerits. How? A pure vegetarian diet can lower obesity levels and reduce the risk of heart diseases. Studies show that vegans have less LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels than non-vegetarians. Also, death rates are lower among vegans. Plus, the large amounts of nuts, vegetables, fruits, seeds, pulses and cereals in a vegan diet contains essential vitamins such as vitamin C and E; they are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, magnesium and dietary fibers. Overall, a vegan diet does have it's benefits after all! Still, what's the other side of the argument? The first thing would be iron deficiency-which is the primary cause of anemia. Iron is less absorbed from vegetarian diets. Another reason for debate is finding a source of protein in a vegan diet, especially if you are into bodybuilding. Although meat is the best known source of protein in a daily diet, a vegan diet can effectively replace it. For example, peas, soy, broccoli, nuts and seeds are rich with protein; and they have less calories as well. Unfortunately, most people are ignorant about these dietary choices. When it comes down to a cut-and-dried choice, I'd go with a vegetarian diet. I have to say that I am soft when it comes to killing things. Also, researchers say that the iron deficiency is a small problem. Our body would adjust gradually; and increases the iron absorption efficiency over time. So, it's your choice!
