A new study by researchers at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine made an interesting suggestion that might be of some rejoice to you guys out there. They suggest that the 'white' fat in the body can be transformed into 'brown' fat to burn off calories and weight.

With the severe problems that are on the rise like heart disease, we have to look at more practical solution. We all know that nobody's going to eat less and exercise overnight these days. So we need a more fast and reliable cure.

I think that this might be as close to a cure as we can get when it comes to obesity. This new suggestion that involves turning the 'bad' fat into 'good' fat can be a serious and revolutionary tool to tackle the obesity problem that we are so much afraid of.

Although these experiments were done on rats, they did not take the risk of running any of them on humans. For five weeks two groups of rats were fed a regular diet, with one group being treated with a virus to reduce NPY (appetite-stimulating neuropeptide Y) expression, and the other as a control group.

At the end of five weeks, the treated group weighed less that the control group. This demonstration of suppressing NPY reduced eating can be considered as the base with which we might be able to do more studies.

This raises the possibility of injecting brown fat stem cells under the skin to burn white fat and stimulate weight loss. Who knows what might happen in the near future?

We might be able to get through this obesity epidemic after all!
