We all know this old usage, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." The real question is, "is it real?" According to Dr. Bahram H Arjmandi and Professor Margaret A. Sitton from the Department of Nutrition, food and exercise sciences at The Florida State University, this "miracle fruit" might have more benefits after all.
Animal studies have shown that apple pectin and polyphenols in apple improve lipid metabolism and the lower production of pro-inflammatory molecules. Its confusing to hear these scientific terms in combination, isn't it?
Anyway, this most recent research was done to evaluate the long-term cardio-protective effects of daily consumption of apple in post-menopausal women.
The study randomly took 160 women ages from 45 to 65 to one of two dietary intervention groups: one with dried apples daily and the others with dried prunes, for 3, 6, or 12 months. The results were surprising. The apple eating women had experienced a 23% decrease in bad cholesterol within 6 months.
This reduced levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), lowering of lipid hydroperoxide levels and C-reactive protein in women while increasing the good cholesterol (HDL) by at at least 4% supports the theory of this miracle fruit.
Its amazing that the extra 240 calories consumed by these women per day did not lead to weight gain as well. They even lost more than 3 pounds. Hear that! This dry apple intake can lead to weight loss as well. The fruit's pectin is known for having a satiety effect, which might be the reason for this weight loss.
Still, there is a need for conformation of this study in a nationwide research. For the time being, we know that we can benefit from consuming apples. This is proof that there is some truth behind these common expressions. And in this case, the nutrition science backs it up.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Be sure to pass this on to your kids as well!
